Deck Board Spacing: How Much Gap Is Right

The gap between deck boards isn't a cosmetic choice — it lets water drain through instead of pooling on the surface, and it gives the boards room to move as they expand and contract. How much gap is right depends heavily on the board material, because wood and composite decking move very differently with moisture and temperature.

Wood decking: plan for shrinkage

Real wood decking (pressure-treated pine, cedar, redwood) typically arrives from the lumberyard still holding some moisture, and it shrinks as it dries in place outdoors. Using a consistent spacer during installation
